Like A Dog

Reading Time: 2 min

If you are the proud owner of a loveable ball of fur otherwise known as a dog, you know what this is.

For those of you who don’t own a dog, this is not a tennis ball. It’s a dog’s one passion, otherwise known as a ball of slime.

And this is Diesel.

Diesel

He really likes the ball of slime.

In fact, he has some difficulty letting go of it, even if he’s playing the fun game of ‘fetch’.

I once had a dog named Abby. She, unlike Diesel, had no trouble letting go of the ball of slime. At every chance, she would bring you the ball of slime, drop it at your feet (or lap…) and then stare at it intently until you threw it, at which she would tear after it, bring it back to you, drop it at your feet (or lap…) and then stare at it intently until you threw it….

You get the picture.

One time we were at the beach and we threw the tennis ball (which had a couple of teeth puncture holes) into the water. It sank to the bottom, but Abby spent a good 30 minutes paddling around and around in circles looking for it. We used to joke that it was her baby.

Unlike Diesel, Abby understood the joy of letting go of the ball of slime. Her desire to run after it and her trust that we’d throw it outweighed her desire to keep her baby by her, in her mouth.

So, as I’m sitting there watching Andrew teach Diesel this concept it struck me. I have been clinging to hopes and dreams much like Diesel grips his tennis ball. Like him, I am so worried I’ll lose the ball of slime that I won’t even let go of it; even though I have no reason to believe that Jesus won’t throw it and it’s more fun to run after it.

I have a ball of slime from which I’m literally hanging by my teeth. And that’s gross. …Jesus and I are working on it. He’s patiently teaching me ‘Fetch’.

How about you?
