Everything about the world right now leaves me feeling heavy and burdened. I don’t have to scroll very far in my inbox or feed to discover something else that leaves me brokenhearted. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
But here’s the thing. I’ve always thought of ‘broken’ as something like being contrite and shattered. But what if “brokenness” is actually the idea of being broken like a horse? A horse must be broken to be useful by its rider. It may not know why it’s riding in the direction it is, but it goes exactly where its rider nudges it to go without question.
I don’t know about you, but these last 18 months have left me feeling pretty broken. Nothing works like it should. But I have found that in my heart, this breaking has begun to strip me of temporary desires and cause me to thirst after eternal ones. The things I used to long for just don’t hold their appeal in the face of such brokenness in the world. I find myself saying frequently, “Come, Lord Jesus, come!” How can one say anything else in a world where there is so much trouble and so little control to change it?
Truthfully, we are in a war. A war for souls. And I am not my own but am a vessel for Christ to use. I am praying that as I come to see more and more who Christ is, I am more willing to trust and obey, to have faith. And, I must have faith until the Great Rider nudges me in another direction. I might end up in a holding pattern or He may lead me up to some mountain I cannot now imagine, but I must wait on God to point me there; I cannot go there until He says.
But in this submission to the Great Rider there is great freedom. Jesus is good and kind and tenderhearted to those who belong to Him. He will lead in His time, in His way. And it is in trusting our Great Rider that we find purpose and peace in our brokenness.
May you and I truly be broken horses used for Christ’s glory!
