The Slow Build

Reading Time: 2 min

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Luke 6: 46-49

As I was reading about the man who built his house on the rock, I was struck by this thought: building our life on the Rock–Jesus–is a process of obedience.

We expect a solid and stable life to be built at the snap of our fingers because we’re impatient, and, let’s be honest, processes are messy and inconvenient.

But Jesus tells us that this man in his building, “dug deep” and “laid the foundation on the rock” (Luke 6:48). This is work that is time-consuming, hard, and, quite frankly, really messy. …And because we’re not finished being sanctified yet, this is exactly what it’s like to come to Jesus, hear His words, and do them: time-consuming, hard, and quite frankly, really messy.

Make sure to note, though, that the man builds his foundation on the rock. His house’s stability depends not only on the foundation but also on the rock. Yes, we must do the hard work messy work of submitting to the sanctification process through obedience; but don’t forget that it’s Jesus who is in charge of the sanctification.

I want my obedience to Jesus to have an immediate effect. I want it to feel good. I want it to be neat and tidy. …But that rarely happens. But in the small steps of faithful obedience and in the steady but messy work of obedience Jesus transforms us into people with lives built on the stable bedrock of Jesus.
