Is it part of your yearly calendar to participate in Lent? For me, it’s not. It’s always seemed to be a tradition people do because of peer pressure. But, as I sit on Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday, or whatever you want to call it, I face tomorrow: Ash Wednesday, the beginning of an old, traditional, 40 period of fasting.
In December, as I began to review 2009 and look to 2010, I made a few decisions to try to focus my 2010. One of them was to try something new, specifically to participate in Lent this year.
And so, come tomorrow, I embark on a new adventure. What will my Lent look like? Well, the big part is that I’ve decided to give up almost all media until April 3rd. For the purpose of this, I’m defining “media” as any form of communication or medium by which a message is broadcasted to me. And by “almost” I mean I’ll still have email and Sunday morning music at church, (and Alex’s CD release concert!)and occasional blogging to share my thoughts, but no facebook, TV, movies, or recorded music.
And while this is an experiment of self-denial, I hope it to be a time of glorifying to God. Someone asked me why I should give up all these things, including Christian music. The main thing is that I just want to hear His voice! I want to have the ears of my heart un-desensitivized from all the noise out there. Internet, Facebook, and recorded music (especially worship music) are all very good things and usually help me in my walk with Christ. But for a time, I think it’s healthy to give up those things in lue of hearing God’s voice first.
So, today’s Pancake Tuesday. A day to clear out the flour and bread (proverbially and literally), to think and plan and prepare for the next 40 days.
I’m going media-free. What about you?
