Can I just say that moving is a lot of work? In the last 6 months, I’ve moved 3 times. …And I know that that’s less than some of you, but still, it’s at least one time too many.
Some of you know the story of the last two weeks in my life, but without going into details, I’ve had a change of plans. Of scenery. Of life. And while I hate all the packing and unpacking I’ve done, I’ve learned a couple of things.
1) It’s easier to take the next step, where ever that is, if you purge when you pack. I’m not a very good purger at all. For example, just this evening my friend, as she’s helping me unpack, holds up a really cool biodegradable plastic bag and asks, “Why are you keeping this?” My response? “It’s biodegradable.” …Clearly she didn’t see the significance of that, so I tried again: “It’s from MEC.” …She made me throw it out.
Connection to everyday life? God has a way of forcing us to deal with the “crap” in our heart before He moves us to the next place in our spiritual journey. It’s often super painful and overwhelming, but pruning means fruit, and in the long run, I’ll take the pruning for fruit. You?
2) I have way too much stuff. WAY too much. I have this dream of one day only owning enough clothes to fill a duffel bag, books (erm– that is, the ones I’m currently reading–the rest would be in storage) in a backpack, and one box of miscellaneous things. I have no idea how I will actually get to that point; I’d actually have to get rid of some things I’m strangely (and stupidly–the biodegradable bag? Seriously?) attached to. I’d have to let go of the concrete and trust our Spirit God who I say I believe is faithful.
So, it’s a new year. It’s a fresh start. In more ways than one. But His mercies are new every morning, and I’m taking that to heart regarding this year. My verse this year is 1 Tim 4:7b-10, and here’s to all the pruning and letting go I do this year, all for the fruit of true “Godward-ness”. Let it be as He sees fit. However much work it is.
